Around half of all food produced globally is wasted, with consumers in developed countries throwing away 30-50% of perishable foods. This waste occurs at all levels of production and results in the loss of resources. Meanwhile, 1 in 9 people worldwide lack sufficient food for a healthy life.
Considering that 1 in 9 people on earth do not have enough food for a healthy life as of 2014, food should be used wisely. However, around half of all food is wasted each year in the world. According to a 2013 report by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers in London, 2 billion tonnes of food – around half of all food produced – goes to waste around the world. Food waste occurs in both developing and developed countries. Consumers in developed countries, such as the United States, throw away approximately 30%-50% of the perishable foods they have purchased. Food waste also occurs at the level of agriculture, transportation and processing of food production. Wasting food also means that the resources used to produce the food, such as land and water, are wasted.
