Forklift trucks are used to load, unload and organize materials in warehouses and shipping operations. Forklift operators must be skilled in driving and lifting heavy loads, and may require certification for different types of forklifts. Certification requirements vary by region.

The term forklift truck refers to a variety of power trucks equipped with lifting forks used to load, unload and organize materials that are stacked on pallets or designed for lifting with forks. Forklift trucks are essential equipment for industrial warehouses and large-scale shipping and receiving operations. A forklift operator is a skilled worker trained to drive and use the lifting capabilities of one or more of several types of forklift trucks. Many countries and regions require forklift operator training and, in some cases, a forklift operator license, due to the potentially hazardous nature of the work and the high value of the goods handled by the elevators.

A forklift operator is generally employed transporting and receiving large amounts of goods in and out of a facility, whether in manufacturing, transport and receiving, or distribution. Forklifts are often used to unload materials from trucks, ships and other large containers used in shipping and distribution. Elevator operators are also responsible for organizing materials for storage and loading large containers for shipment to other facilities. The scale of materials transported and elevators used varies greatly depending on the type of industry in question.

In addition to simply driving a forklift, working as a forklift operator requires the ability to lift, balance and properly stack heavy loads that are normally placed on a wooden pallet or pallet made from other materials. Larger items can be secured to a pallet or have forklift recesses built into the item itself. Warehouse organization and shipping and receiving operations focus on using as little space as possible to organize materials. Therefore, a forklift operator must be able to use the machine to fit large, heavy pallets into relatively small areas, such as large shelving devices.

There are several types of forklift trucks produced to suit a variety of industries, and they vary greatly in terms of size and operation. Due to the varied types of forklift trucks produced, forklift operation may require certification and licensing. In fact, a forklift operating position can require certification for a number of different machines, depending on the variety of goods and machines involved in the job site. Certification requirements are not standard across the world, and while some regions may have strict requirements, other areas may not require certification or licensing.
