At eleven in the morning the ducks march across a red carpet to swim in the marble fountain and return at five in the evening to be taken back to their home on the roof of the Hotel. This march has been a tradition here since 1930, when ducks were found living on the roof of the Peabody Hotel. Every few months the ducks are moved to a nature reserve and new ducks are brought to the hotel.
The Crystal Shrine Grotto was created in the late 1930s by artist Dionicio Rodriguez and is a work of art that you can view for free in Memphis. Rodriguez dug a cave into a rocky hill and included biblical figures in his work. In the Rodriguez cave, made up of thousands of semi-precious stones, rock and crystal, panels depicting Jesus and other characters from the Bible are inserted.
Schwab’s is a dry goods store that first opened in 1876. Schwab’s has many of its original antiques, making it a favorite free-to-visit site in Memphis even if the store can be a little musty. Schwab’s was known for its unusual products such as voodoo powder. Most of the shop’s equipment is also original.
You can tour the 1852 Elmwood Cemetery in Memphis for free. It is recognized by the National Register of Historic Places, but is still in service. Elmwood Cemetery has beautiful gardens and contains the graves of many military generals and politicians.
The Wolf River Natural Area offers plenty of free things to do in Memphis. Paddling, hiking, biking, and jogging are favorite activities here. The Wolf River Natural Area is known for wildlife such as foxes, coyotes, otters, deer and bobcats. Trees in the area include hardwoods such as black gum, tupelo gum, red maple, and bald cypress.
