Fuel pump valve: what is it?

Fuel pump valves control the amount of fuel an engine receives for efficient operation. They allow for the right mix of oxygen and gasoline and are typically one-way valves. Modern valves are electronically powered and work with an exhaust valve to release exhaust after fuel is burned. Fuel pump valves are crucial for personal automobiles and large mechanical devices and will continue to be used as long as liquid fuels are used.

A fuel pump valve is a part of a device that uses a form of fuel such as gasoline to fuel itself. These valves are found in all car engines and gas generators. They also have a number of less common industrial uses. Primarily, however, they are used to control how much fuel an engine receives to ensure that it performs its function as efficiently as possible. Whenever internal combustion is required to operate a device or machine, a fuel pump valve is used.

As mentioned above, the primary use of a fuel pump valve is as a flow control valve. Fuels like gasoline need to be mixed with the right amount of air to burn. A fuel pump valve allows for the right mix of oxygen and gasoline to ensure maximum engine performance.

The valve can be powered in two different ways. They were all originally mechanically powered using a diaphragm which sucked in and released air and fuel. In modern automobiles this method has largely been replaced by electronically powered valves. These send fuel to the engine with the exact amount of pressure and combine the fluid with the exact amount of air required for its efficient operation.

Every common fuel pump valve is a form of one-way valve, also known as a check valve. A one-way valve allows fluid to flow in one direction only. This is important because the pressure that builds up inside a standard engine is very high to allow for the most efficient combustion. If the valve allowed fluid back into the tank it came from, it could cause an explosion or, at the very least, prevent the engine from operating at full capacity.

Another valve on the engine allows the exhaust produced in the combustion of gasoline and air to be released. This action is precisely timed, electronically or mechanically. The exhaust is released immediately after the fuel is burned. It is only open for a short time and closes right away before more fuel is released through the fuel pump valve into the combustion chamber.

The fuel pump valve is one of the most important inventions, enabling the use of the personal automobile. The high amount of pressure and energy created by the corresponding parts of an engine also enables the power of large mechanical devices. These valves will continue to be in use as long as liquid fuels are used.
