Gearbox belt pulley: what is it?

A transmission belt pulley uses grooves to interlock with a belt, providing a pulley system that doesn’t rely solely on friction. It is used in manufacturing and industrial sectors, such as belt conveyors. The derailleur pulley was once used in automotive power transmissions but has been replaced by belt pulleys using friction. When selecting a derailleur belt pulley, dimensions should be checked to ensure safe and secure operation.

A transmission belt pulley, also called a timing belt, is part of a pulley system that uses aspects of gear pulley systems and belt pulley systems. The basic design of the transmission belt pulley system consists of a belt with grooves or edges that protrude from the inner lining. The shaft of the pulley system also has these grooves, or “teeth,” which interlock with the inner grooves of the belt to rotate about the axis of the shaft. This type of pulley system is used in many different fields including manufacturing and industrial sectors. The purpose of a transmission belt pulley is to provide a machine with a pulley system that does not rely solely on friction to operate.

In manufacturing, belt conveyors may use the timing belt pulley as a means of transporting certain types of items from one location to another. While one axle – a cylindrically shaped barrel – drives at one end of the conveyor, another similarly shaped axle rotates in synchronized motion with the drive axle. Each of these barrel axles has grooves that interlock with the inner grooves of the conveyor belt, guiding the belt along the entire length of the pulley system. If the belt is long, however, it will have intermediate cylindrical axes which rotate while supporting the weight of the belt.

The derailleur pulley was once used in automotive power transmissions. His belt was made of a strong and durable metal alloy that was resistant to tearing and made with fine grooves that would lock and interlock with the axle of a drive shaft. Using this type of pulley system, however, has proven to be disadvantageous because the engine power may be too high for the drive belt. If too much power is applied to the engine, the transmission belt pulley would be destroyed and would need to be replaced. This type of pulley has ceased to be used in cars and has been replaced by belt pulleys using friction.

When selecting a derailleur belt pulley for use in a pulley system, dimensions should be checked to ensure safe and secure operation. One dimension to look for is the ratio of the drive axle to the slave axle. Another dimension to consider is the length the shift belt should be to fit each axle snugly. The last important dimension is the size and shape of the axle and belt grooves. These grooves must match each other to properly lock and drive the entire transmission belt pulley system.
