Gene regulation is the process by which cells determine which genes to express and when. It is important for cellular differentiation, function, and adaptation to changing environments. There are also potential therapeutic applications for the process. By knowing which genes are involved in a cancer or genetic condition, for example, it is theoretically possible to turn off these genes so they cannot be active in the body.
