The TOEIC® tests English skills for work and study. The Listening Exam assesses understanding of spoken English in workplace and everyday situations. Practice tests are available online and involve choosing correct answers to questions and summarizing images. The exam includes questions on conversations between multiple speakers and monologues from a single speaker.
The Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC®) tests your English speaking, writing, listening and reading skills at intermediate to advanced levels. Employers use the exam to assess your English skills and universities use the exam to make sure your English is good enough for studying. The TOEIC® Listening exam tests your ability to understand conversations in English with various accents and focuses on conversations you would hear in the workplace and in everyday life. Scoring well on the listening exam involves being able to explain what is happening in the pictures provided, being able to choose the correct answers to the questions asked, and using correct grammar in the process.
The TOEIC® Listening Exam begins by showing you various pictures but does not include written text. You’ll be prompted to listen to four audio clips explaining what’s happening in a particular image, and your job is to choose the one that best describes the scene. To prepare for these questions, you’ll need to practice explaining various images, and several practice tests are available online to help you. This will increase your vocabulary and help you decide the best answer when listening to audio clips. Audio clips will be concise, so you’ll want to be able to properly summarize an image in a few words.
The second type of question you’ll see on the TOEIC® Listening Exam tests your ability to listen to the basic questions and choose a correct answer from the choices you hear. You’ll hear questions asking why, how, or what someone is doing, and you’ll need to choose the sentence that’s grammatically correct and makes sense in context. Online audio sample tests are also available for this portion of the test, as are the practice tests on CD, and both provide a wide range of questions. Practicing with a friend can help too, simply because one of the fastest ways to improve your language skills is to use them.
The last two parts of the TOEIC® Listening Exam provide recordings of short conversations between multiple speakers and monologues from a single speaker. For questions involving a conversation between two or more people, you’ll be asked about the content of the conversation, including the topics discussed, the setting, and the speakers’ motivations. The questions in a monologue are more detailed and address the purposes of the speech and the situation in which the speech was heard. The test guides with included CDs are a good way to practice this section of the TOEIC® Listening Exam.
