Glasses vs. flasks: what’s different?

Beakers and flasks differ in shape and use. Beakers are used for mixing while flasks are used for storage and prevention of contamination. Tumblers have measuring lines, but only graduated cylinders are accurate. Flasks are made of glass or plastic and have caps and lids for containment. Beakers are used for chemical and physical experiments, while flasks have a wider range of uses, including connecting to other equipment and measuring gas production.

There are many differences between the two common laboratory containers called beakers and flasks. The main difference between beakers and flasks is their shape. A glass is a cylinder with a pouring lip and no lid. The flasks are curved without a lip and have lids. Another difference between glasses and flasks is their use. The glasses are used for careful mixing because they have a lip, but they are not used for storage. Flasks are used for storage and prevent contamination by using a lid, usually a glass or rubber stopper.

Tumblers come in many sizes, but all have straight sides and flat bottoms. The taller and wider the cylinder, the more difficult it becomes to accurately measure the amount of fluid in a beaker. The narrowest glass is called a graduated cylinder. This tumbler has measuring lines to determine accurate volume. Other glasses have some measurement lines but they are not considered accurate and are only used to estimate the amount of fluid in the glass.

Flasks are designed to hold and seal fluids. They usually have a broad body and a narrow neck. This allows the fluid to remain less in contact with the external environment. The bottles have caps and lids for even more containment.
Beakers and flasks are not made from the same materials. Flasks are always made of glass and plastic, while glasses are sometimes made of metals, such as tin. Beakers and flasks differ in variety and shape. Only a few types of tumblers are used while many different types of flasks are used.

The use of beakers in the laboratory is usually to mix and perform chemical and physical experiments. Graduated cylinders are the only beaker used to measure volume. The most common beakers are used for mixing acids and bases with water or for other liquid reactions. A crystalliser is a short, wide glass that is used to dry materials that will form crystals. Beakers aren’t used all that often, but they’re important for careful pouring and making observations in the lab.

Water bottles are used to hold and store liquids for long periods of time and in a sealed environment. This allows for a much wider range of uses for flasks. The flasks can also be connected to other equipment with glass or plastic tubing. Almost all reactions that produce gas will use a flask to separate the gas and measure the amount produced. Some flasks use a vacuum pump to change the pressure in a container for experimental processes, such as filtration.
