Gonadotropin and weight loss: any link?

Gonadotropin hormone injections have been claimed to induce weight loss by burning or transferring fat and lowering hunger levels. However, scientific research has failed to establish a substantial link between gonadotrophins and weight loss, and the drug can produce serious side effects. The United States Food and Drug Administration has issued a warning regarding fraudulent promotions of this hormonal product.

Hormone treatments have long been used for a number of conditions. Proponents claim that one of these hormones, gonadotropin, can induce weight loss in individuals. This purported benefit is assumed to come from the hormone’s ability to burn or transfer fat and lower hunger levels through a part of the brain. While proponents have heralded scientific evidence for these theories, subsequent scientific research has failed to establish a substantial link between gonadotrophins and weight loss. In fact, the drug can produce serious side effects in some individuals.

The term gonadotropin refers to the protein hormones created in the pituitary gland that bear the full name of human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG). Generally produced during pregnancy or the development of cancer, this substance is often the subject of pregnancy and cancer tests. Doctors can also prescribe the hormone for fertility treatments. A more controversial potential medical use is an alleged connection between gonadotropins and weight loss.

An English doctor in the 1950s first proposed a link between gonadotropins and weight loss. According to Dr. Albert Simeons, gonadotropin injections could lead to a number of effects that could help an individual lose weight. At a basic level, the injection is supposed to curb hunger. Thus, individuals could survive on a 500-calorie daily diet.

Also, the already stored fat could be burned, just as if you were exercising. Even leftover fats could be moved from problem areas like the waist and thighs and transferred elsewhere. These assumptions could be due to the role of gonadotropin in pregnancy, which consists in converting fat into usable energy for the fetus. Simeons himself believed that the hormone could direct the hypothalamus of the brain to induce weight loss.

Critics, however, argue that any weight loss from a gonadotropin approach is due specifically to the calorie-restricted aspect of the diet. Therefore, they argue, gonadotropin and weight loss shouldn’t be associated. Several scientific studies that have investigated the relationship between gonadotropin and weight loss have concluded that there is no positive correlation. Additionally, the United States Food and Drug Administration has issued a warning regarding fraudulent promotions of this hormonal product.

Attempting to combine gonadotropin and weight loss methods can create unwanted side effects, according to some medical professionals. For one, the hormone itself has a host of side effects that include headaches, fatigue, and nausea. Even more serious complications can arise, ranging from chest pains to, ironically, weight gain. Also, the low-calorie diet can deprive the body of necessary nutrients.
