Google offers tools like googlebars and the Google Toolbar to enhance online experiences. Both allow Google features to be used directly in a browser, but the official Google Toolbar has more functionality, including autofill. Googlebar was created by open source developers for Netscape and Firefox, but has slowed down in development since the release of the official Google Toolbar.
Google has provided the Internet community with many tools to improve search and other online experiences. Among these innovations are googlebars and the Google Toolbar which, once installed, allow Google features to live directly within a browser. It also eliminates the need to visit the Google home page to use search and other features.
When using the Google Toolbar, bookmarks can be stored, search with suggestions is available, and web pages can be shared with friends right from the browser window. While googlebar and Google Toolbar are both useful tools, there are some differences noted.
Googlebar is an open source application created to make the utilities provided for Internet Explorer® with the Google Toolbar available to Netscape and Mozilla Firefox® users. The design of googlebar and Google Toolbar look slightly different, but the main functionality is the same, to insert Google tools into your browser application.
One difference between googlebar and Google Toolbar was that googlebar was created by the same group of open source developers behind the Firefox® browser, while Google’s internal developer team created the Google Toolbar. Since the release of Mozilla Firefox®, the Google Toolbar has been expanded to function as a toolbar in the Firefox® browser and Internet Explorer®, making the Google officially supported toolbar the most downloaded application. Googlebar development has slowed down due to some Google Toolbar updates and popularity spreading.
One major difference in functionality between the googlebar and the Google Toolbar is that the official Google Toolbar has autofill functionality, which requires additional plug-ins for the Netscape and Firefox browsers. Although Google ported their toolbar to Mozilla Firefox®, which is based on the code that created Netscape®, the official toolbar doesn’t work within Netscape Navigator®. To use this feature, you will still need the googlebar for this to happen.
The “what’s new” section of the Mozilla® googlebar website hasn’t been updated since 2006 most likely because the Google Toolbar has been ported to Firefox® and the latest versions of Internet Explorer®, but Firefox 1.5 with the googlebar installed and updated to the latest version will still work quite well.
