Hats come in various shapes, sizes, and styles, from caps to hard hats to sun hats. They can be made from different materials and decorated with various embellishments. Important parts of a hat include the wing, chin clasp, crown, ear flaps, and visor. Some popular types of hats include baseball caps, beanies, cowboy hats, and sun hats. Certain hats, such as the yarmulke, zucchetto, and mitres, signify religious or royal office.

A hat is a head covering that can be part of a uniform or worn for warmth, fashion, shade, or safety. A hat without a brim is called a cap, and caps sometimes have bills. A hat worn for safety is often referred to as a hard hat.

Hats can be soft or rigid, made from a single piece of cloth or sewn together, and virtually invisible or large and obvious. Hats can be embellished with pom poms, fruit, feathers, ribbons, and jewels. Stickers and autographs can even be found as decorations on certain hats.

The main parts of a hat are:

Wing: a horizontal extension around the perimeter of the crown; may be partial

Chin clasp: Something that holds the hat secure by connecting the two sides of the crown under the wearer’s chin, for example with ties.

Crown: The largest part of the hat that covers the crown of the head.

Ear flaps: this is how they sound: flaps to cover the ears and keep them warm; they can end in chin ties, or not

visor or peak: a roughly horizontal extension of the crown that is only at the front of the hat, to shade the wearer’s eyes; often duckbill shaped.

Here is information on some of the important types of hats.

Hard Hats Probably the most recognizable types of hard hats are batting helmets worn by baseball players, mining helmets, and hard hats for protecting people in construction areas. Helmets come in two types:

Helmets with brims not less than 1 1/4 in. (3.18 cm) wide

rimless hooves with a forward-extending bill.

covers. Baseball caps, stocking caps, ski caps, and scull caps are brimless hats used for warmth, sun protection, and sports. Beanies are also a kind of cap.

Other Hats Older hats that aren’t worn as much as they used to include the bonnet. However, the bowler or derby, created in 1850, although no longer a part of the worker’s uniform as it used to be, is still popular. In addition, the top hat, dating from the late 18th century, and the cowboy hat, with the opening of John Stetson’s hat company in 1865, are styles that have been popular for many years.

The chef’s hat, or toque, has been worn since the 16th century, and the uniform was revamped by Marie-Antoine Carême in the mid-1850s. In addition, the beret has also been worn for centuries, often by members of the armed forces. The fedora and deer stalker have also stood the test of time.

Sun hats are simply wide-brimmed hats worn to keep the head cool and shade the eyes, and while appearing in newer versions using updated fabrics and colors, the hat as a concept is not bound by style. Today, sun hats can incorporate fabrics such as mesh, carry an Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) rating, pack down and/or float if dropped in water, and include a variety of other new features, while serving to keep the sun out of one’s eyes

There are also hats that are ceremonial and change little over time, such as the Jewish yarmulke (also spelled yarmelke and yamaka). The zucchetto and mitres worn by Catholic clergy, and some of the crowns worn by royalty, are examples of headgear signifying office.
