Body armor, made of Kevlar or similar materials, provides soldiers and police with superhuman defense against bullets. Kevlar is a synthetic fiber that is five times stronger than steel and is made up of millions of tiny planar sheets. The best armor, like Dragon Skin, can stop a machine gun at close range.
Body armor, or more commonly, “body armor” – or, more appropriately, “body armor” – is a staple for soldiers, police, and bodyguards everywhere. Bullets are hard and fast, and human flesh is weak and soft. Armor is the trump card that gives soldiers superhuman defense against flying projectiles.
Almost all forms of body armor involve Kevlar® or something similar, and much more expensive. Kevlar® is DuPont’s brand name for a synthetic fiber claimed to be five times stronger than steel, by weight. Its chemical name is polyparaphenylene terephthalamide.
Kevlar® is produced by polymerization and spun in much the same way a spider spins its web. The material’s molecular-level structure is made up of millions of tiny planar sheets, only one molecule thick. It is through this onion-like layering that Kevlar® gets its formidable stopping power. That is, the various layers are able to absorb at least part of the kinetic energy of the projectile and deflect it in another direction.
Kevlar® has only been around since the early 1970’s and is obviously just the latest step in the ongoing arms race between body armor and guns. Kevlar® was a big step forward for body armor because it’s lightweight, strong, flexible, and stops very fast-moving bullets. There are multiple classes of Kevlar® bulletproof vests, defined by what types of bullets they can block at what velocities, and some of the better models have metal or ceramic “shock plates” that provide even more protection. A typical bulletproof vest has ten to thirty layers of Kevlar® for redundant protection.
Some of the best armor in existence is virtually impervious to conventional firearms. For example, the Dragon Skin armor, manufactured by the Pinnacle Armor company, is made up of hundreds of small laminated titanium or ceramic discs and can stop a machine gun at close range. This armor is so effective that it is worn by US generals while in the field.
