The industrial design process involves creating a product design and going through various stages to make it. The type of product created depends on the designer’s goal, and clients may provide input. The process can be initiated by designers or meet industry needs, improve existing products, or stand out in style.

The industrial design process mainly comprises the conception of a design for a product and the various stages involved in making the design. There are no limits to the types of products that can be created by applying the industrial design process, as it all depends on what the designers are trying to achieve. Sometimes the purpose of design is to assist a particular client in carrying out the design and creation of a concept. Other times, the designer has to deal with the conceptualization of the product and all the research necessary to apply the concept to a particular use.

The first phase of the industrial design process is the design phase, which may involve customer input. The clients who contract the services of these designers usually come from different sectors, such as manufacturing, healthcare or consumer products. When the client communicates to the designer the company’s goal in relation to the product, the designer will apply this information and any other feasible specifications to the design of the product. Assuming that the customer’s goal is to create a product that stands out from its competitors, the designer will use this information as a basis for creating the product concept.

For example, assuming that a baby products company wants to produce diapers that are different from anything on the market, this will serve as a cue for designers to create something different. In this case, the strategy the customer is trying to achieve is to differentiate themselves from other similar manufacturers. As such, the client and the designers will be closely involved in the process of accompanying the product through the various stages of the initial concept up to the production of a prototype. If the customer is dissatisfied with anything at any stage of the process, he will have the opportunity to request reasonable changes.

Sometimes the industrial design process is the initiative of designers who can look for openings in the various sectors where their creativity can be applied to the creation of a product. Such a product could meet an industry need or it could be an improvement on already existing products. Alternatively, the product may simply stand out from the rest in style, shape or colour.
