To become a gym manager, a combination of business experience and education is usually required. One can gain experience by working entry-level jobs at fitness clubs and expressing interest in becoming a supervisor or manager. Alternatively, earning a degree in business administration and fitness can make one more attractive to employers. Once hired, a gym manager has various responsibilities, including staff accounting, hiring and firing, and maintaining fitness equipment.

The requirements to become a gym manager can vary at different gyms. In general, the requirements are similar to any other managerial position. Generally, a combination of business experience and business management education is required to work as a fitness club manager.

If you already know that you want to become a fitness club manager, there are two possible paths to take. The first is the path of experience. Apply for a job at a fitness club near you, even an entry-level job. Once you get a position at a fitness club, start learning about the business, as well as becoming familiar with hiring procedures and the ways in which employees are promoted. You might even find that you don’t want to work as a fitness club manager or look for a different exercise facility where you can find employment.

During the time you work at the fitness club, always show your responsibility by arriving at work on time and completing your work as requested by going above and beyond what is necessary. Always dress and behave professionally and offer to help others if needed. Develop positive working relationships with other employees and your superiors, and after a reasonable amount of time, express your interest in becoming a supervisor or manager. Current managers will be able to instruct you on the way forward.

Another option for becoming a fitness club manager is to earn a degree in business administration after high school, which may allow you to be hired immediately in a managerial position. You can even choose to get a second degree, or a minor, in fitness, which may make you more attractive to a fitness center. It’s still a good idea to work at a fitness center, if possible, throughout high school and college in order to build an experience relevant to your resume.

Remember that once you become a fitness club manager, you will have a lot of responsibility. Staff accounting, accounting, hiring and firing, training and maintaining fitness equipment, and the amount of supplies available are all potential responsibilities a manager will have. For this reason, it is necessary to present yourself well in an interview and appear motivated, responsible and capable of accepting new challenges and bringing new ideas to the business.
