A chief sustainability officer is responsible for an organization’s environmental and sustainability concerns. To become one, executive experience, sustainability-related education, and a science background are important. Look for job openings in larger companies with “green” aspects.

A chief sustainability officer is an individual responsible for an organization’s environmental and sustainability concerns. This could include programs dedicated to minimizing the company’s negative environmental effect, making a positive contribution to the environment, and educating employees about sustainability. To become a chief sustainability officer, you generally need to have executive experience and an interest in environmental and sustainability issues. Sustainability-related education and experience can also greatly increase the likelihood that someone will be chosen to become a sustainability officer. There is no rigidly defined range of experience or education that one must follow to become a chief sustainability officer, but there are many ways in which one can become a good candidate for the position.

When seeking to become a chief sustainability officer, one should choose an educational path that emphasizes both executive and environmental skills and knowledge. Communication, business and other courses of study that emphasize professional communication and management skills can often prepare one for this position – some universities even incorporate sustainability training into their MBA programs. A science major, such as chemistry or biology, can also provide a solid science background, which is important for anyone who needs to make informed decisions related to sustainability and the environment. More specific science courses, such as environmental chemistry or ecology, can make an even better candidate for a sustainability director position.

Professional experience is often as important as education for anyone wanting to become a sustainability director. As it is an executive position that requires strong management skills, people with no prior executive experience are generally not assigned a sustainability officer position. As such, in order to become a chief sustainability officer, it is important to gain some executive experience, whether or not related to sustainability or the environment.

When gaining executive experience, look for a company that has a job opening for a Chief Sustainability Officer. These types of positions are generally not limited to specific sectors, but are generally found in larger companies, especially those that highlight some aspects of their business as being “green”. Some companies won’t really have a formalized position with that title, but they might have a similar position, such as an environmental policy manager or director of social and environmental responsibility, who basically fulfill the same role and follow a similar educational path.
