To become an international accountant, a bachelor’s degree in accounting is required, but some companies may require a master’s degree or CPA credentials. At least five years of experience is necessary, and knowledge of foreign languages and international communication practices is beneficial. Understanding accounting practices in other countries is also important.
For most international accountant positions at US-based employers, you will need to have a bachelor’s degree in accounting. Many companies, however, require applicants to have an advanced education to become an international accountant. Qualifying credentials may include a master’s degree in accounting or possessing credentials as a certified public accountant (CPA). In some cases, applicants who hold a master’s of business administration (MBA) qualify for this type of job.
Most international accounting positions require candidates to have at least five years of professional experience, although some require less than two years. Very few of these positions are entry-level, although it’s not impossible to find them, particularly if you graduated from a top-tier college or university. Keep in mind that some employers will look for candidates who specialize in one or more areas of accounting. If there is even one aspect of this field where you can claim expert-level expertise or call it a specialty, then you could have an advantage over your competitors.
Due to the very nature of international work environments, you can be expected to know at least one additional language if you want to become an international accountant. Some employers will look for candidates who can speak, read and write in multiple foreign languages. Don’t be discouraged, however, if you don’t have that particular skill. If your educational credentials are impressive enough, the inability to converse in a foreign language may not necessarily eliminate you from contention.
In addition to foreign languages, to become an international accountant, it is possible that you will have excellent communication skills in your native language. In addition to communicating with your co-workers, you can also communicate with people from other companies. These individuals may not only speak a different language, but they may also come from different cultures and environments. If you have some experience or training in international communication practices, this can go a long way in helping you find a good job.
Depending on the countries your employer does business with, you will likely need knowledge of accounting practices in other countries. You will typically need to be well-versed in areas such as taxation, auditing policies and expense allocation. This can be quite tricky, which is why having an educational background in international accounting procedures can help you become an international accountant.
