A Certified Financial Planner (CFP) helps clients plan their financial futures by helping plan for retirement, getting the best insurance for specific situations, and assessing financial goals. The job encompasses a variety of functions ranging from preparing an initial financial plan to executing and monitoring the plan. The nature of the work means that a Certified Financial Planner spends a large part of their work working with the public. To become a Certified Financial Planner, you’ll need to earn a bachelor’s degree, take an approved CFP course, pass the certification exam, and have three years of financial planning experience.

You will need a bachelor’s degree and you will also need to take a CFP program at a certified Financial Planner Board registered college to become a Certified Financial Planner. This program usually consists of five or six courses that cover the knowledge gained for the exam, including investing, estate planning, employee benefits, financial planning processes, and tax planning. Those holding specific higher degrees or certifications may be allowed to take the certification exam without this program; however, you will need to submit your college transcript for consideration. If you decide not to earn a degree or certificate from a registered program, you can still take the certification exam, but you will need to earn an accepted degree or certification before earning certification.

If you want to become a Certified Financial Planner , take the Certified Financial Planner exam, which covers several areas of accounting processes, financial analysis, economics, economics, insurance and business law. The exam asks you to apply the things you learned in your studies to various problems. You will need to register for the exam and pay a fee, and the exam is usually held over a period of two days.

After passing the CFP exam, you will still not become a Certified Financial Planner until you meet the experience requirements. You will need at least three years of experience working full time in financial planning and will need to submit documentation of your experience to the CFP Council.
