How to calm a child?

Babies cry to communicate and need help regulating their emotions. Hunger, dirty diapers, pacifiers, rocking, walks, and baths can all help soothe a fussy baby. Learning your baby’s cues is key.

Infants lack the ability to regulate their emotions on their own. They will cry and fuss until someone picks them up and calms them down. Until they’re able to talk or otherwise communicate, it’s basically a guessing game to figure out what will make them happy. There are several things you can try in an attempt to pacify your baby.
Babies often cry because they are hungry. Unlike older children, a toddler can’t just say that he’s hungry. As soon as he cries, he tries to feed her. If he instantly latches onto your breast or bottle, he was probably hungry. When your baby turns his head away, it’s usually a sign that he’s not interested in eating.

Check your baby’s diaper if he doesn’t seem hungry. Most babies cry when they have had a bowel movement. Some babies don’t even like it when the diaper is slightly wet. Change his diaper and see if he’s happy.

To pacify babies who have a strong urge to suckle, try a pacifier. Pacifiers, also known as binkies, are meant to satisfy babies with an intense oral fixation. The act of sucking soothes most babies, which is why they often fall asleep when they eat. If your baby seems to be eating way more than most, he may just need a pacifier.

You can pacify some babies by rocking them. Many babies love to be rocked, as it simulates the movement they felt in the womb. It is very soothing and can calm fussy babies immediately. Have your baby rocked in a comfortable chair, away from the noise of the house. Try singing a nursery rhyme if it calms your baby.

Pacify your active toddler by taking him for a walk. High-energy kids can enjoy the pace of a brisk walk, whether in a stroller or backpack. Fresh air is also recommended to soothe colicky babies. If you feel tense from your baby’s fussing, even a brisk walk might make you feel better.

If your baby fidgets in the evening, try to calm him down with a warm lavender-scented bath. It is especially relaxing for your baby if you take a bath with him and he feels you are relaxing. Some babies get irritable if they are congested and warm water will help clear his sinuses.

There’s a long list of reasons why your baby might be cranky. Just as you are affected by things throughout the day, so is your baby. Over time, you will learn to recognize your baby’s cues and be able to calm him down easily.
