Veterinary technician certification is available in several countries, including the UK, Europe, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and the US. Practical training is required, and longer courses allow for specialization. Online courses are available but require hands-on training from a licensed veterinarian.

Veterinary technician certification is a qualification offered in the UK, several European countries, Japan, Australia and New Zealand, as well as the US. These countries are members of the International Association of Veterinary Nurses and Technicians, a professional organization founded in 1993. If you want to become certified as a veterinary technician, you will need to study for two to four years to learn skills that will allow you to assist a veterinarian in caring for animals. Upon qualification, you may be known as a Veterinary Technician, Veterinary Nurse or Veterinary Assistant.

When studying for veterinary technician certification, you will learn a wide range of skills and techniques that will allow you to care for animal patients and assist a veterinarian or animal surgeon. Skills and concepts you can learn include skilled nursing care for animals, preparing animals for surgery and equipment, medical and diagnostic procedures, specimen collection and laboratory analysis, and radiography. In addition, you will learn about working with pet owners to obtain medical histories and provide advice and education on pet care.

The types of training and exams offered at various veterinary technician certification schools are not the same in all countries and may even differ between schools in the same country. The curriculum at most schools is, however, quite similar, covering certain essential skills and concepts. Training for veterinary technicians includes theoretical and practical classes and exams. You must pass theory and practice exams to qualify.

Becoming a veterinary technician requires successful completion of a course of study lasting at least two years. Two-, three- and four-year courses can be completed, with longer courses providing more extensive training and allowing graduates to be more competitive in the job market. Additionally, if you complete longer courses, you have the opportunity to specialize in an area such as emergency animal medicine, anesthesiology, zoological medicine, equine medicine or clinical practice.

In some countries, you can earn your veterinary technician certification by studying online. Theory and fundamental concepts are learned in a virtual classroom or through the use of conventional study materials. If you study online, you can’t learn practical skills this way; therefore, this portion of the course is replaced by hands-on training from a licensed veterinarian. This type of training is an essential component of many traditional courses, as well as distance learning and online studies. In the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, and many other countries, hands-on training from a licensed veterinarian is an essential part of achieving certification in veterinary technology.
