To get rid of mice, inspect your home for entry points and signs of infestation. Use snap traps or glue boards to catch them, but be cautious with poisons. Keep your home clean and free of attractants like food scraps and trash.
Mice are among the most feared of household pests. If you have discovered them in your house or apartment, your first thought may be to move as far away as possible. Unfortunately, this is not a practical solution and you will need to use some reliable methods to get rid of the mice. To begin, you will need to inspect your house or apartment to find out where they are entering and where they are hiding.
To get rid of mice, your home inspection should include every part of your home, from the basement up to the top floor, including your attic. Some signs of rats include gnawing, fecal matter, urine droplets, dirt spots, and entry holes. When you find holes, plug them right away. Use grout mixed with broken glass to fill any holes and cracks you find in the walls and around the foundation of your home; the glass acts as a deterrent to mice trying to get inside while the grout dries. Check around pipes, wires, and screens for any openings that allow mice to enter. They only need about 1/2 inch (1.27 centimeters) to get back to your house, so if in doubt, plug or seal the opening.
Next, work on getting rid of mice that have already entered your home. Snap traps are among the most effective approaches. Some of them are very sensitive and when a mouse steps on one, it quickly gets up and traps it. Place these traps along walls, especially in places where you’ve found evidence of a rat infestation. Put bait on your snap traps, like bacon or something else that smells good, to attract mice.
Glue boards can also be used to get rid of mice; parasites attach themselves to them and become trapped. Keep in mind, however, that they tend to be less efficient for full-sized adult rats. However, it is best to ensure that children and pets cannot reach them, as they too can get stuck. Also, mice don’t die once they get stuck, so you’ll need to poach them in hot water or place them in tightly closed metal cans for disposal. Alternatively, you can use electric mouse traps, instead of glue traps that don’t actually kill rodents, to deliver a fatal electric shock once the mice are drawn inside.
Poisons can also be used to kill rats, but there are some drawbacks. First, they can be dangerous if you have pets or children in the house. Also, poisoned mice can hide in your home where you can’t find them, such as inside your walls. As their bodies rot, they emit a terrible smell and attract insects. For this reason, many people recommend using them as a last resort.
Your work to get rid of mice will all be in vain if you don’t take the time to get rid of the things that attract them in the first place. Sweep up every day and make sure you don’t leave leftovers lying around after dinner. Keep trash and waste in metal or glass containers; make sure the lids are on tight, and don’t use plastic. Also, it is helpful to place non-perishable foods, such as cereals, rice, pasta and bread, in metal or glass containers. Outside the home, get rid of debris and use metal trash cans that are kept closed and away from outside walls.
