Urine tests can detect legal and illegal drugs, and the only way to pass is to have no drugs in your system. Flushing, dilution, adulteration, masking, and urine replacement are illegal methods to pass a test, but they are unreliable and can be easily detected.
Urine tests for medications are often given to people due to company policies or for insurance reasons before starting a job. Urine tests can detect many different types of legal and illegal drugs, including heroin, cocaine, marijuana, and methamphetamines. The only legitimate way for a person to pass a urine test is to have no drugs in their system when the test is being taken. Otherwise, there are ways to make it appear that a person has successfully passed a urine test, even if the drugs are still in their system. In most states and countries that have urine tests, these methods are considered illegal. At the very least, they can get a person fired if they get caught.
Many times, a person trying to pass a urine test with clean urine will flush their system beforehand. This involves drinking lots of water and other liquids, such as coffee or soda, to force yourself to urinate more before the actual test. This can help temporarily eliminate any traces of an illegal drug that might show up during a test. Flushing usually leads to colorless or pale urine, and many drug testing agencies won’t accept samples that look red.
Some drugs are easier to clear from your system than others. A similar method used to pass a drug test is called dilution, which is when a person will directly add water to the sample. This can make it difficult to read drug traces during urinalysis, but it also changes the temperature of the sample. Most drug testing and screening facilities find that the coldest or warmest urine samples are those that have been tampered with.
Another common method of trying to pass a urine test is adulteration of the sample. This involves adding a foreign substance into the sample which removes all evidence of a drug. Salt, soap, ammonia and lye have been used to nullify the drugs found in a urine test. This doesn’t always work and can be easily detected by more advanced tests.
A similar method used to try to fake a drug test is masking. Some legal drugs, such as antacids and aspirin, are known to mask illegal drugs such as cannabis and opiates. Just like adulteration, this technique isn’t very reliable, especially against more advanced drug tests. Some shops sell commercial products that advertise masking capabilities, but the reliability of these products is often questioned and in many places they are not legal.
One of the most common methods used to pass a urine test is to use urine replacement. An addict trying to pass a drug test will obtain urine from someone who is not an addict and hide it on their body, usually in a balloon, plastic bag, or condom. When it comes time to take the drug test, the user empties clean urine into the container and passes it as her own.
Aside from the fact that it’s illegal almost everywhere, there are a lot of problems with this plan. Urine outside the body does not have the same temperature as urine inside the body, and urine samples are always tested for temperature. A urine sample that is too cold will almost always be suspicious. Smuggling and depositing urine in the sample cup is also not easy. Many drug testing facilities search applicants for contraband urine, and some will even have employees present in the bathroom to make sure the applicant is urinating into the bowl.
