How to understand?

The comprehension approach to language learning involves understanding the meaning of words and expressions, rather than just memorizing letters and symbols. It often involves a silent period for the learner to assimilate the language, but may lead to difficulty speaking.

The comprehension approach refers to a method of learning a new language through the process of understanding the meaning of words and expressions in the language as opposed to any other form of language learning. Other methods that can be used as part of language learning progression include the process of learning the letters, symbols, and other representations of the language before actually understanding the meaning of the words. The difference between the compression approach and the other more scientific approach to learning a new language is that the comprehension approach is simply another dimension towards learning a new language.

The comprehension approach usually involves a period of silence in which the student tries to assimilate the various meanings of the words that make up the target language. The length of the silent period depends on the student’s abilities in terms of comprehension skills and general cognitive skills, as those who are quick learners may be able to quickly grasp the basic concepts of a new language faster than others. During the silent period, the new language learner will try as much as possible to understand what the words mean and how they are pronounced. The downside to this type of approach is that some people who aren’t very confident may decide to wait until they feel they have fully grasped the concepts of the language, including correct pronunciation, before attempting to speak that language. This may be due to a reluctance to mispronounce words or misapply the tongue while attempting to speak it.

An advantage of the language learning comprehension approach is the fact that when the learner understands the meaning and correct application of words, the language will sound more easily when speaking it in contrast to other forms of language learning, which can involve more bombastic efforts. Since the understanding approach requires a deliberate effort to first understand the language, it often leads to situations where the language learner might understand the general gist of the language, but lack the ability to speak it. This phenomenon can be attributed to the fact that the brain is a complex entity that allows resources to compartmentalize different cognitive abilities, as is clearly evident in the ability to learn the meaning of a language before speaking it.
