HR management faces challenges such as employee turnover, fair compensation, and ongoing training. Other challenges include compliance with labor laws and developing future leadership. HR personnel must identify potential in employees and work with managers to promote them within the organization.

HR management challenges can vary somewhat from one setting to another, but there is a core group of challenges that are likely to apply in nearly every type and size of business. Challenges such as dealing with changes in operating procedures, employee turnover, balancing the need to compensate employees fairly with the need to keep the company financially solvent, and even the creation and structure of ongoing employee training processes likely will be part of HR matters that require constant attention and refinement. Without the time to identify and address human resource management challenges, a company’s potential to thrive is greatly diminished.

Many of the HR management challenges focus on the employees associated with the organization. Within this cluster of issues, HR personnel will find it necessary to consider the effectiveness of screening and hiring new employees, what mechanisms are in place to adequately train those new hires, and even how to go about structuring a package of benefits that is likely to attract qualified candidates. The challenges don’t end when an employee is on board and properly trained; HR efforts continue in the form of constantly working on compensation that prevents those valuable employees from seeking opportunities elsewhere, implementing processes that assist in employee evaluation, and generally making sure employees have what they need to be productive and remain an asset to the company.

Other types of HR management challenges are also found in almost every organization. These may focus on how to work with company directors, officers, and owners and officers to ensure that the company complies with all applicable labor laws in the jurisdictions in which the company operates. Depending on how often those laws are updated, educating owners and officers about these changes and also working with management to implement necessary changes to company policies and procedures can be an ongoing effort.

Among the various challenges of managing human resources is the need to constantly be on the lookout for opportunities to develop future leadership for the company. This may mean being aware of the potential of different employees and working with managers and others to identify when additional training may be worthy.

While sometimes overlooked or seen as a function that falls solely within the province of executives, HR personnel can often see the potential in employees that others overlook and take steps to ascertain both the level of interest and potential possessed by specific employees are eventually promoted within the corporate organization. This particular challenge may be hindered or helped by the general corporate culture that prevails and by current management’s willingness to see the wisdom in investing more resources in certain employees as a means of preparing for the future.
