Desktop computer security protects against external threats, including malware and unauthorized access. New computers come with free security features like password protection and anti-malware software. Physical security equipment is also available. Apple’s Mac OS is generally considered more secure than Windows, but no system can guarantee complete security.

Desktop computer security is the process of ensuring that a computer is safe from external threats. These threats usually occur when a computer is connected to the Internet, but they can also be spread using unsafe hardware that has been infected on another computer. Security can protect a computer system from unauthorized users attempting to access parts or all of a network that they are not authorized to use. Physical security systems can also protect a computer from being forcibly removed from a business or home.

Almost all new computers come with free security features. Standard desktop computer security includes password protection. This applies to certain high-risk areas of a computer’s hard drive that contain sensitive information or could harm the computer if tampered with. Anti-malware software is also a standard form of desktop computer security that is often included free with newer computer systems.

Malware is a form of malicious software designed to disrupt a computer’s normal functions. It can also steal information and distribute it to the creator of the software. This information can be as simple as information about the websites a user has visited, which can be used for illegal direct advertising. It can also be credit card information or other personal information that a hacker can use to steal money from a user. More malware is created each year than legitimate software and it targets both large corporations and home computer users, so desktop computer security is essential to protect against this threat.

Like any expensive piece of equipment, a computer can also be subject to physical theft. While most forms of desktop computer security do not directly address this problem, there is a growing market for physical computer security equipment. Some computers have a part of their physical structure that can be locked to the rest of the workstation, making unauthorized removal more difficult. Personal computers and laptops with features like these can have all of their hardware locked down, making physical theft more difficult. These are needed more in large computer labs than for home use, but some users prefer them for the added security they offer.

When comparing two major computer operating systems (OS) available to the general public, Apple®’s Mac OS® advertises better desktop computer security than the rival Microsoft® Windows® operating system. While this is generally true, even if a user is running Mac OS® with the most up-to-date anti-malware software available, their security system could still be overloaded. There is no way to guarantee that a system’s desktop computer security makes it completely secure. However, a good security system can prevent most threats and is very important for any user who wants to use the Internet.
