Inductive charging transfers energy wirelessly between two power systems with electric coils generating an electromagnetic field. It has advantages such as wireless charging and modular construction, but disadvantages include heat and power consumption.

Inductive charging is a method of moving energy wirelessly. A power generation system is positioned next to an energy storage or transfer system. An electromagnetic field is generated between the two objects and power moves from one system to another. Inductive charging is a common way to move energy from a main system to a subsystem, such as the power grid, to a local transformer. It could also work on a smaller scale, allowing portable gadgets to benefit from wireless charging.

No matter which scale you use, inductive charging works the same. To begin, two power systems are placed very close to each other. These power systems must not be exposed or connected to each other. Each of these power systems contains an electric coil. This coil stores electricity for the eventual use of the device.

Due to the proximity of the coils to each other, they generate a low-power electric field that connects them. This field allows the two systems to transfer electrical energy as if they were connected. In general, this will cause the two power systems to share electricity until both have exactly the same amount of power. Because a small amount of power is lost in the transfer, this balance is usually only possible when both systems are out of power.

With inductive charging, one of your devices generates power or has an external power source and one of them doesn’t. Since a device is constantly powered, it will never run out of electricity; this is the sender. When the receiver can no longer take power, the sender stops sending it. This system bypasses the normal induction problem by keeping the feed systems constantly full.

Induction has several advantages over standard power transfer. One of the main advantages is that it is wireless. This allows fuel systems to have a modular construction, making repairs easier. Because it is wireless, power systems can be completely enclosed, making the system air and water tight. In the case of electric gadgets, there is no upper limit on the amount of devices that can be charged at once; this allows a single inductive charging mat to charge multiple items simultaneously.

The main disadvantages of inductive charging are heat and power consumption. In most cases, more energy is required to inductively charge an item than to charge it by normal means. This is a result of the power lost to the electric field used to connect the coils. Additionally, the process has the potential to generate a lot of heat. The amount of heat generated is an indicator of how much electricity is lost in the process.
