A waiver is a document used to release a person or organization from liability. It can be used for insurance or educational purposes, as well as in workplaces. If an individual declines insurance coverage, they may be asked to sign an insurance waiver to acknowledge and reject the offer.
A waiver is a form or document used to release a person or organization from liability. For example, a person learning to dive may receive a waiver form from their instructor. By signing the waiver form, the individual would be agreeing not to hold the instructor and the organization responsible for any accidents they did not cause or contribute to due to negligence. However, an insurance waiver is a little different. An individual usually signs this type of waiver when they have been offered some type of insurance and have decided to decline it.
Sometimes educational institutions use an insurance waiver form. For example, a higher education institution may require its students to enroll in a student health insurance plan that it sponsors. If a student already has insurance and wants to keep it, you may not need the student insurance plan. In that case, the school may ask you to sign a form stating that they reject the student’s health plan because you already have health insurance coverage. Sometimes a student may want health insurance but decide to decline the vision and dental portion of the plan; when this happens, the student can sign an insurance waiver that covers only the insurance programs that she does not need.
In some cases, people may be asked to sign insurance waivers at their workplaces. For example, a company may offer some type of insurance as part of its employee benefits package. An individual may, however, have a better plan with lower rates that she wishes to keep. Sometimes an employee wants to decline coverage because they are already covered by the employer-sponsored spouse’s insurance program. If so, the employer may ask the employee to sign a form stating that you declined coverage through the employer’s plan.
Sometimes an individual may also be asked to sign an insurance waiver from an insurance company or agent. An individual may, for example, purchase life insurance coverage from an insurance company. Your insurance agent may offer an additional type of insurance as an option on your life insurance coverage. If the person refuses optional coverage, the insurance agent may ask him to sign an insurance waiver. In essence, the signing of this waiver is to be understood as acknowledgment of the optional insurance offer as well as rejection of the same.
