Is divorce legal worldwide?

[ad_1]

The Philippines does not allow divorce, but legal separations and annulments are permitted. Some believe this is an honor, while others, especially women’s rights advocates, want divorce to be legalized. In February 2020, the House of Representatives passed three measures towards legalizing divorce. The Vatican is the only other country where divorce is illegal. Infidelity is not forbidden, as seen in the case of former Senator Ramon Revilla Sr.

There are few places on Earth where divorce is illegal. In the Philippines, where Catholicism reigns, the Family Code does not allow divorces, but allows legal separations and annulments, even if the latter can be particularly expensive and difficult to obtain. An archbishop emeritus said the absence of divorce is “an honor every Filipino should be proud of.” Others urge the Southeast Asian nation not to follow the example of “de-Christianized countries”. However, there are many in the Philippines, especially women’s rights advocates, who would like to see divorce legalized. In February 2020, the Philippines took a small step towards legalizing divorce when a House of Representatives committee passed three measures that will be debated and debated. Eventually, President Rodrigo Duterte is expected to pass a new law, and he has come out firmly against it, despite having his marriage annulled in 2000.

‘Till death do Us part:

“Divorce is not a monster that will destroy marriages,” lawmaker Edcel Lagman said, as quoted by CNN Philippines. “The monsters that lead to the end of a marriage are infidelity, abuse, financial problems, lack of intimacy and communication and inequality.”
Vatican City is the only other country where you cannot get a divorce. Catholicism has consistently lost the divorce battle since Italy legalized divorce in 1970.
That doesn’t mean infidelity is forbidden. For example, former Philippine Senator Ramon Revilla Sr., a famous movie star turned politician, is said to have fathered 72 children by 16 different women, only one of whom was his wife.
