Is there a way to tell if an egg is hard boiled before cracking it?

To tell the difference between a raw and a hard-boiled egg, spin it on a surface. A hard-boiled egg will spin smoothly, while a raw egg will wobble erratically due to the mixture of yolk and egg white. Additionally, egg yolk color is determined by a hen’s diet, cloudy egg whites indicate freshness, and blood in an egg doesn’t mean it’s not safe to eat.

Want to know which eggs in the fridge are raw and which ones have been hard-boiled? If you spin one on the counter, the hard-boiled egg will spin smoothly and quickly, kind of like a top. The raw egg, on the other hand, will wobble and spin more awkwardly. The reason for this difference is that the inside of the boiled egg is solid, so everything moves together as one entity. The inside of the raw egg, of course, is a runny mixture of yolk and egg white, all of which are swirling at the same time. Because the yolk and egg white have different densities, the raw egg will rock in a decidedly erratic motion and from side to side.

What to look for in an egg:

Egg yolk color is determined by a hen’s diet. The more grain a hen eats, the more vibrant the color of the yolks in the eggs she lays.
Cloudy egg whites indicate that the egg is very fresh. Light egg whites indicate that the egg is aging.
The blood sometimes seen in an egg comes from ruptured tiny blood vessels in the yolk. That doesn’t mean the egg isn’t safe to eat.
