Karl Benz patents the first gas-powered car in 1886, while in 1979, Jimmy Carter and Deng Xiaoping sign deals, marking a turning point in Sino-US relations. The first successful gas-powered automobile is patented. (1886) Karl Benz patented the “Benz Patent Motorwagon” which looked a lot like a tricycle with a padded seat. Making a gas-powered car had been a long-held dream of Benz, who initially started tinkering with engines in his spare time as a bike shop owner.

Jimmy Carter and Deng Xiaoping have signed deals. (1979) This marked a turning point in Sino-US relations, which had been frosty for nearly 30 years. The agreements, along with the major economic reforms implemented by Deng, are credited with bringing China into the modern world.

“Dr. Strangelove” debuted. (1964) Kubrick’s classic black comedy demonstrated the nation’s frustration with the nuclear arms race and the heightened Cold War tensions in general. It became an instant classic, thanks in part to Peter Sellers memorable performance as Dr. Strangelove, and remains a classic example of a satirical film.

George Bush gave his “Axis of Evil” speech. (2002) In his controversial State of the Union address, Bush named North Korea, Iran and Iraq as the Axis of Evil. In the same speech, he outlined America’s proactive stance in fighting terrorism and denounced all nations that harbored terrorists.

King George III is dead. (1820) George III is best known for his folly and loss of the American colonies. He had retired from public life after finally going insane in 1789.

The last monarch of Hawaii came to power. (1891) Liliuokalani became queen of Hawaii after the death of her brother, King Kalakaua. You only ruled for two years before being overthrown by a coalition of American businessmen.

Queen Victoria began issuing the Victoria Cross. (1856) The Victoria Cross is the highest decoration available in the British Army and is awarded for “Valor in the face of the enemy”. Less than 2,000 VC were issued and are extremely valuable as both collectors items and pieces of history.

“The Raven” was released for the first time. (1845) Edgar Allan Poe’s most famous poem was originally published in the New York Evening Mirror, where it met with lukewarm reviews. Poe was almost completely ignored during his lifetime, but later became a hugely popular Gothic author.

France halted nuclear weapons tests. (1996) President Jacques Chirac halted nuclear weapons testing one day after France detonated its largest nuclear device in the South Pacific. The resulting outcry both in France and abroad was considerable and forced Chirac to halt the tests.

The first members of the Baseball Hall of Fame were inducted. (1936) Among the top five nominees were Ty Cobb and Babe Ruth.
