Inaugurated the first roller coaster in America. (1884) LaMarcus Thompson installed roller coaster, called the switchback railway, in Brooklyn, New York on Coney Island. People paid five cents (US dollars) to ride the roller coaster, which traveled at about 6 miles per hour (nearly 10 kilometers per hour). It was so popular that by 1900, hundreds of roller coasters popped up across the country.

The first woman was launched into space. (1963) Valentina Tereshkova was the first woman to travel outside the earth’s atmosphere. You traveled through space aboard the Soviet Union’s Vostok 6.

The first of the New Deal programs has been approved. (1933) US President Roosevelt began his New Deal recovery plan in response to the Great Depression. He has provided aid in a variety of forms, including financial aid to farmers, financial assistance through the Social Security Act, and union support. Eventually, many of the programs were found unconstitutional by the US Supreme Court, but they led to legislation such as the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938, which set standards for the workday and wages.

The first commercial aircraft hijacking occurred. (1948) Passenger seaplane Miss Macao was en route to Hong Kong when four men burst into the cockpit; three of them had guns. The pilot refused to relinquish control and the co-pilot fought back. In the scuffle, the pilot was killed and the plane crashed into the ocean. 25 of the 26 passengers died in the crash. The only survivor was one of the hijackers.

Incorporated Ford Motor Co. (1903) Incorporation papers were signed at 9:30 in Detroit, MI. Twelve shareholders were listed; they invested $28,000 US Dollars (USD) to start the company. Two of the investors were John and Horace Dodge, who would later found the Dodge automobile company.

The song Like a Rolling Stone was recorded. (1965) American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan recorded the song. In 2004, Rolling Stone magazine listed it as the greatest song of all time.

Geronimo is born. (1829) Geronimo was a chief of the Native American Chiricahua Apache tribe. He became famous for fighting against the United States and Mexico and for his numerous escapes from capture.

British comedian Stan Laurel is born. (1890) One half of the famous comedy team of Laurel and Hardy, Stan was born Arthur Stanley Jefferson. He starred in 190 films and was awarded an Academy Award for Lifetime Achievement in 1961. He died in 1965 of a heart attack. At Laurel’s funeral, Buster Keaton said: “Chaplin wasn’t the funniest, I wasn’t the funniest, this man was the funniest.”

American golfer Phil Mickelson is born. (1970) Mickelson, also called “Lefty” for being one of the few left-handed professional golfers, won several major championships on the PGA Tour and repeatedly achieved a career ranking as the second best golfer in the world.
