The canals have historical significance as George Washington oversaw the original canal design in Richmond which was done to make the St. James River rapids safer for navigation.
The Meadow Farm Museum, in the nearby Glen Allen–Henrico County area, features costumed museum guides who offer an interesting look into the life of the family that owned and lived on Meadow Farm just before the Civil War began. The holding includes a blacksmith’s forge, farmstead, barns and pastures. The museum is great to see with children in Richmond as it has many different farm animals. The Science Museum of Virginia offers hands-on exhibits in scientific areas such as computers, physics, and aerospace. Life sciences are represented by the Bioscape exhibit which examines the cellular and global effects of biology. There is also an underwater Aluminaut display, the largest collection of crystallography in the world and the largest sundial in the world.
CMOR is an excellent museum to visit with children in Richmond, even if they are as young as six months old. Little CMOR is a room full of museum exhibits created especially for children aged six months to four years. The rest of the museum is aimed at children up to eight years old and the exhibits are innovative and interactive. For example, there’s an inventor’s workshop, cave exploration, digestive tract exhibit, artwork to create, and music to compose. CMOR’s outdoor exhibits include a play area with a theatre.
