Landscape Irrigation: What is it?

Landscape irrigation is necessary for most climates and involves four basic types of systems: drip, mobile, aerial, and underground. Each system depends on factors such as size, location, and plant life. Underground sprinkler systems are the most popular and expensive but can be environmentally friendly.

Landscape irrigation is an irrigation system used to create and maintain custom lawns, gardens and landscapes. The main function of a landscape irrigation system is to ensure that water is distributed regularly and evenly in any given landscape. A handful of places in the world don’t require sophisticated landscape irrigation systems, but they are the exception, not the rule. For the rest of the world, especially the driest climates on earth, lawn irrigation is required on an almost daily basis. Whether basic or high-tech, sprinkler systems deliver the right amount of water to the right places, which is essential for lawn care.

The type of irrigation project and system will depend on a number of factors, such as the size of the lawn or garden, geographic location, underground services and environmental regulations. It will also depend on the different types of plant life involved such as flowers, trees, vegetables and even the type of grass. Even with so many different factors involved in landscape irrigation and systems, there are only four basic types of irrigation systems. These include drip systems, mobile systems, overhead systems, and underground lawn sprinkler systems.

Drip systems are commonly used for flower and vegetable gardens. A drip irrigation system can be as simple as installing overhead piping with small holes to allow water to drip at a constant rate, to a more sophisticated system that uses special components to control the exact flow of water. Drip irrigation systems are considered an economical and environmentally friendly alternative to sprinkler systems that tend to use more than double the amount of water to maintain a garden or other landscape.

Mobile systems are the preferred system for lawn irrigation and are also suitable for vegetable gardens and flowers. This type of garden sprinkler system uses standard garden hoses and consumer grade sprinklers. Mobile systems would have to be moved and rebuilt periodically, which can be a problem for time-conscious individuals.

Aerial landscape irrigation is ideal for flowers and vegetable gardens, but is impractical for most lawn irrigation. One benefit of overhead irrigation is that it doesn’t affect the look of the landscape, meaning you don’t need to create trenches and the equipment doesn’t protrude above the ground. Inexpensive pipes and tubes are installed overhead and the system is placed on a timer.

One of the most popular systems for landscape irrigation is the underground sprinkler system. This type of system consists of pop-up sprinkler heads and automatic timers making it one of the best and most expensive systems for lawns, flower gardens and vegetable gardens, both large and small. With a few small precautions, an “underground” irrigation system can also become an “environmentally friendly” irrigation system. When water is applied near the roots of plants, it goes directly to where it is needed and less is lost to evaporation.
