India is building the world’s tallest statue, the Statue of Unity, in honor of independence leader Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. It will be twice as tall as the Statue of Liberty and cost around $500 million. The statue will be completed by the end of the year and will surpass the current record holder, the Spring Buddha temple in China. Plans for an even taller statue, the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Memorial, are also in the works.
India has started building a monument to independence leader Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel that will dwarf all other statues around the world, including the current record holder, the giant Spring Buddha temple in China, when completed by the end of the year. The Statue of Unity is so tall that, upon completion, it will be approximately twice as tall as the Statue of Liberty. The American Monument stands approximately 305 feet (93m) if you measure it from the bottom of its base to the tip of its torch. The Statue of Unity, currently under construction in India’s westernmost state of Gujarat, will touch the skies at 597 feet (182m), but in reality closer to 790 feet (240m) including its base. The statue of Patel, India’s first deputy minister, is expected to cost the nation around $500 million (USD).
Higher, higher, higher:
The Statue of Liberty wears a crown with seven points, each point measuring nine feet (2.7m) in length. They represent the seven continents of the world.
Completed in 2008, the Spring Temple Buddha in Lushan County, Henan, China depicts the Vairocana Buddha and stands 420 feet (128 m) tall.
The Statue of Unity may not hold the world record for long, if plans for the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Memorial go ahead. The statue honoring the founder of the Maratha Empire would be located in the Arabian Sea in front of the city of Mumbai, reaching a height of 690 feet (210m) or 886 feet (270m) including its base.
