Also keep an eye on your belongings; try using a purse or backpack that zips tightly and keep money and other valuables out of sight. Especially when traveling on buses and trains at night, be careful.

It’s also a great idea to dress sensibly. If you’re attending an all-night event or coming home from work, bring along a pair of practical shoes so you can move around easily. Consider replacing a skirt or other restrictive clothing with clothing that allows for free range of motion. Also, dress in light colors so you’re visible to motorists and other pedestrians. Keep your keys handy; not only will it save you from having to fumble with them at the door, but the keys can also be used as a self-defense weapon. Also, if you frequently travel at night, you may want to consider purchasing mace or pepper spray for personal safety.

Many communities offer self-defense classes through women’s shelters and local law enforcement agencies, along with personal safety workshops. Taking a self-defense class will greatly increase your personal confidence making you more confident and able to protect yourself.
