A lathe mechanic works on one of several types of lathe machines. If a lathe mechanic does not know how to operate these tools, he may need to enlist the assistance of someone who does; however, many employers require their lathe technicians to have a working knowledge of basic machining tools.

Other job tasks of the lathe mechanic include measuring, examining, analyzing and testing manufactured units. Fortunately, by inspecting and testing the completed units, any defects will be detected.
