Dance teachers are needed at universities and schools for young dance students. They require at least a bachelor’s degree and advanced degrees in dance history, education, or studies. Experience in the discipline they wish to teach is also necessary. Requirements vary depending on the age and level of the students.

Dance teacher jobs are mostly found at universities with strong performing arts departments or at schools set up for the specific reason of supporting arts or young dance students. A dance teacher adds value to a dance student’s life by sharing interesting stories about the history of dance with the student. Dance teachers can also be called dance instructors. In this regard, there are many types of dance teacher jobs available, depending on the discipline and the age and ability of the students taking the courses.

As a dance teacher at a university, you are required to have at least a bachelor’s degree and a more advanced degree in dance history, dance education, or dance studies. Teachers typically need a doctorate of philosophy (PhD) to teach. Many schools offer degrees in these subjects. The aspiring dance teacher should research schools in their area to decide which is the best fit.

An advanced degree in dance history or dance studies requires a lot of study and critical thinking. To become a lecturer, you need a strong understanding of how dance developed, the different forms of movement, and the key players in the major dance disciplines. Going through a graduate program at an accredited university will help to inculcate these subjects in the minds of future dance teachers.

The vast majority of dance disciplines offer dance lecturer jobs. Whether it’s ballet, modern dance, jazz, tap or something else, schools will need teachers who are qualified, patient with students and passionate about dance. Most dance lecturer jobs require applicants to have at least five years of experience dancing in the discipline they wish to teach. Dance teaching experience, either on an internship or full-time basis, is also a must. Volunteer experience teaching dance is generally permissible provided the organization has a serious arts program and the candidate has been committed to the volunteer position for a significant period of time.

Dance teacher requirements differ depending on the level and age of the student the candidate wants to teach. Positions that work with younger students with less experience may accept dance teachers with less dance experience. The dance studio or school will still need evidence of previous experience working with children. Teaching positions working with older, more experienced students in a dance studio or company typically require applicants to be more experienced and highly regarded dancers.
