Lefties smarter than righties?

Left-handed people have more efficient communication between their brain hemispheres, allowing for faster processing of stimuli. They may have cognitive advantages, explaining their prevalence in certain professions. They make up 10% of the population and may have lower rates of arthritis and ulcers.

A 2006 study reported in the journal Neuropsychology appears to indicate that left-handed brains amalgamate information between the cerebral hemispheres more efficiently than right-handed ones. Left-handed people are more “bi-brained”. This faster information transfer allows them to process more stimuli faster – skills required in activities such as playing video games, sports or driving in heavy traffic. While no studies have shown lefties to be smarter than righties, they suggest that lefties have some cognitive advantages, which may explain why lefties are common among mathematicians, architects, artists, and chess experts.

What’s left to say?

Research suggests that left-handed people are more likely to suffer from learning disabilities, dyslexia and mental disorders than right-handed people.
