Low Carb Wine: What is it?

Low-carb wines contain fewer than 7g of carbohydrates per 5oz glass, with most wines falling under this category. Brown-Forman Wines has developed a range of ultra-low-carb wines, including One.6 Chardonnay and One.9 Merlot, which contain 1.6g and 1.9g of carbohydrates per glass, respectively. The company uses a dry fermentation process to remove excess sugar from the grapes, and the wines sell for around $10 per bottle.

The U.S. regulatory body that oversees wine labeling has stated since 2004 that a low-carb wine is one that contains fewer than 7 grams of carbohydrates in a 5-ounce glass. As the data available at the United States Department of Agriculture show, this applies to virtually all wines and wine-based products. The department says a 5-ounce glass of a typical dry red wine contains 102 calories and 2.41 grams of carbohydrates. Similarly, a typical glass of white wine offers 96 calories and just 1.13 grams of carbohydrates. The rule of thumb for the number of carbohydrates per wine is the lower the alcohol content, the lower the number of carbohydrates.

There are, however, a number of wines with notoriously high levels of carbohydrates, including high sugar and dessert wines such as white Zinfandels and those wines that are neither red nor white and are known in Europe as rosé wines and in the U.S. like red wines.

However, winemakers have started catering to dieters and those looking for ultra-low-carb wines. At the forefront of this low-carb trend is the new range of wines being developed by a Louisville-based company called Brown-Forman Wines. Their line of low-carb wines contains bottles labeled One.6 Chardonnay and One.9 Merlot. As their names suggest, the former contains 1.6 grams of carbohydrates while the latter 1.9 grams per 5-ounce glass. The chardonnay boasts a blend of citrus and melon and the Merlot is spiced with a forest berry soup. The company is already looking to add to its lineup of low-carb wines and has a Cabernet Sauvignon in the works that will contain just 1.9 grams of carbohydrates.

Low-carb Brown-Forman wines are the product of a million-dollar research project that manipulates the wine’s fermentation process to get rid of all excess sugar. The process involves selecting the most appropriate low-carb grapes which are then stripped of all their excess sugar content by a process known as dry fermentation. The wine is then blended to maximize its flavor. A bottle of low-carb wine sells for about ten dollars. However, it should be noted that due to the advertised low carbohydrate content of all these wines, their calorie content is very similar to that of a wine developed according to the normal fermentation process.
