Luxembourg is a small country in Western Europe, smaller than Rhode Island, bordering Belgium, France, and Germany. It has a strong GDP and is a member of the UN, NATO, and the EU. It has a constitutional monarchy and is the only sovereign Grand Duchy in the world. It has historic villages, castles, and museums, and is easy to reach by land or air.

Luxembourg is a small country in Western Europe. It covers just 1,000 square miles (2,500 square km), making it smaller than the state of Rhode Island. It borders Belgium, France and Germany.

Luxembourg is a remnant of a time in Europe’s past when many smaller states existed, before larger nation states formed over much of the continent. Luxembourg belonged to many different people, including the Habsburgs, Burgundy, the Bourbons, France, Prussia and the Netherlands. Luxembourg first proclaimed independence after the defeat of Napoleon in 1815, although it remained contested by several powers. Luxembourg eventually became part of the German Confederation and joined the Netherlands, before much of its land went to Belgium following the Belgian Revolution.

In 1839 Luxembourg proclaimed its independence again, proclaiming it again in 1867, and again in 1890. The proclamation of independence in 1890, following the death of the king of the Netherlands and the transfer of sovereignty to his daughter – who by Luxembourg law he may not have been king — he eventually completely separated Luxembourg from the Netherlands.

Luxembourg was a founding member of the United Nations, NATO and the European Union. Although an incredibly small country, Luxembourg has a relatively strong GDP and the RTL media group operating out of Luxembourg is the largest television and radio company in Europe. Due to its small population and strong banking and financial markets, Luxembourg holds the distinction of having the world’s highest per capita GDP: more than $90,000 US dollars (USD) per person.

Luxembourg continues to operate under the auspices of a constitutional monarchy and is technically a Grand Duchy, the only sovereign Grand Duchy in the world. It is the great European traditions and historical remains that attract most people to Luxembourg: the national motto is Mir welle bleiwe wat mir sinn, literally “We want to remain who we are”, and this philosophy certainly influences the way the country presents.

Historic villages dot the countryside, with lush green valleys criss-crossed by babbling rivers spanned by scenic bridges. It’s the kind of fairytale setting that many people associate with Western Europe, and for those looking to immerse themselves in this type of setting, Luxembourg is ideal. Millennial castles, such as the Chateau de Bourscheid, can be found throughout the country and museums abound. Services in the country are not particularly cheap, but are of consistently high quality.

Luxembourg is easy to reach by land from any neighboring country, and airlines fly direct to Findel Airport from most major European cities and US locations.
