Maca and tribulus are plants used in alternative medicine to increase sexual desire and performance. Maca is a Peruvian tuber plant, while tribulus is a vine-like plant. Limited clinical studies suggest that maca may be more effective in increasing sexual desire. Both have different side effects and alternate names.

Maca and tribulus are plants used as the basis for alternative medical treatments, mainly to increase sexual desire and performance. The key differences between maca and tribulus center in the type of plant is each, where each grows best, and the reported effectiveness of medications derived from them. Maca is a Peruvian tuber-type plant with a bulbous, radish-like edible root that grows best in higher, cooler conditions. Tribulus is a vine-like plant that grows best in arid climates, including desert regions. Limited clinical studies seem to indicate that maca may be more effective than tribulus in increasing sexual desire.

Peruvians have cultivated maca for about 2,000 years. The plant grows particularly well in the high reaches of the Andes mountains. For a long time it was used as a staple food and as a cash crop. Local legends say that Inca warriors would take maca before battle because it increased their strength, and afterwards the warriors had to stay away from the women of the conquered cities because the root also increased their sexual desire and virility. Maca root extract is now widely available commercially in capsule form.

Tribulus is a low growing vine with a spiny fruit used to make a medicinal extract. Also known as Tribulus terrestris, the plant contains a naturally occurring steroid-like substance that is believed to enhance a variety of physical activities, including sexual performance. Popular for centuries in China, it has gained wider use in the West along with a growing interest in alternative medicine. It is widely available in tablet form.

Both maca and tribulus have been the subject of limited clinical studies. Two studies, for example, using control groups taking maca and a placebo seemed to indicate an increase in sexual desire, and one of the studies showed an increase in sperm count. A study of Bulgarian athletes reportedly documented improved athletic performance when taking the herb; however, those results have not been confirmed by additional testing.

Maca and tribulus exhibit limited but different side effects. Tribulus is said to cause breast enlargement in men and may increase menstrual bleeding in women. Not recommended for pregnant women or nursing mothers. The stimulant properties of maca can cause anxiety. It is a good idea to consult with a knowledgeable health professional before using any of the substances.

Both maca and tribulus go by alternate names. Maca is often called the ginseng of Peru, although it is not related to that plant. The technical name for maca is Lepidium meyenii. Tribulus is known as the puncture vine, due to the small spines on the fruit.
