Mag drive pumps use a magnetic coupling to spin the impeller, eliminating the need for a seal around the drive shaft and reducing the risk of leaks. There are two basic designs, rotating shaft and fixed shaft, and they are suitable for various applications. Mag drive pumps use a magnetic coupling to spin the impeller, which provides the pumping action. The impeller is joined to a shaft bearing a permanent magnet. This facility is sealed in a containment unit separate from the engine. A second set of magnetos is joined to the crankshaft which connects to the motor. The two sets of magnets form a coupling that transmits torque from the motor to the impeller.

Such a design eliminates the need for a seal around the drive shaft, which is the norm for standard pumping devices. Eliminating the gasket greatly reduces the possibility of leaks. Damage to the pump seal due to vibration and loss of integrity due to aging increase the risk of material loss over time. Mag drive pumps effectively eliminate this problem and are the preferred design for handling high risk materials.

Typically, mag drive pumps are used to move liquids such as petrol, diesel and heating oil. Loss of the pump when transferring these types of materials would pose a serious risk of combustion. Properly designed mag drive pumps are also capable of handling corrosive agents, high temperature material and hazardous chemicals. The two basic designs for mag drive pumps are the rotating shaft and the fixed shaft. The rotating shaft design is the sturdier of the two, typically constructed with metal components. This offers maximum capacity for heavy applications requiring high pressure or temperature. Fixed shaft pumps offer a simpler design and use plastic or ceramic parts. This increases corrosion resistance, but limits their use to a narrower operating range for temperature and pressure.

Mag drive pumps are generally classified based on the flow rate and discharge pressure, suction and discharge diameter, as well as the temperature of the material they are capable of safely handling. A power source is not necessarily included with the pump. The pump has been successfully adapted for use with compressed air, internal combustion and electrical energy sources.

The design is suitable for a variety of industrial, commercial and domestic applications. Safety is increased in the petroleum and chemical industries by eliminating leaks common to standard pumping devices. In municipal sewers and wastewater treatment plants, mag drive pumps help reduce contamination and preserve environmental integrity.
