There is something you can see in every state capital but one, and for those who don’t appreciate fast food, it could be a blessing. According to Reader’s Digest, Montpelier, Vermont is the only capital city in America without McDonald’s. Sure, Montpelier is also the smallest capital city in terms of population, with fewer than 8,000 people, and you can fill up on Big Macs and fries in the nearby town of Barre.
However, Montpelier prides itself on serving local businesses – you won’t find even a Burger King or Taco Bell – and according to the Montpelier Alive website, a focus on local businesses makes the city unique.
“Montpelier has more than 40 independently owned businesses, where you can really enjoy shopping again,” the site says. For the record, an analysis by Stephen Von Worley found that there is no location in the continental United States more than 115 miles (185km) from a McDonald’s.
