Montauk, NY is a popular beach destination at the tip of Long Island. It can get crowded in the summer, but is serene in the off-season. The Montauk Point Lighthouse, the oldest in NY, is a must-see for history buffs and offers a spectacular view.
Montauk, New York is located at the tip of the peninsula that is Long Island. The city is lined with beaches and, as such, has become a very popular place to travel to on holiday. Many people who live and work in the New York City area find it necessary to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy some beach time in the summer. After all, it’s hard to catch a cool ocean breeze in Manhattan on a sweltering summer day. Montauk can be reached both by car and by Long Island Rail Road, and from Manhattan it takes between two and a half and three and a half hours.
In the summer, Montauk can actually get a little crowded, as many beach towns are on holiday weekends and other peak travel seasons. If you plan to visit Montauk in the summer, be sure to book your lodging in advance or else you could find yourself without a place to stay. If you have plenty of time to plan your trip, you may want to stay at one of the inns or bed and breakfasts in Montauk. Most of them are quite charming and comfortable.
Montauk is also a wonderful place to visit in the off season. Even if the weather won’t encourage you to don your bathing suit to the beach, Montauk is a wonderfully serene and beautiful place to vacation between the months of October and April. While not all restaurants stay open year-round, many do. One of the best restaurants in town is Harvest. It is known for its delicious appetizers which are served in extremely generous portions. For great bar food or sandwiches in a relaxed setting, be sure to have lunch or dinner at O’Murphy’s.
For history buffs, or anyone just wanting to enjoy a beautiful ocean view, the Montauk Point Lighthouse is a must-see. The lighthouse is the oldest in New York State. In fact, President George Washington authorized its construction. As well as still functioning as a lighthouse, the site now houses an informational museum. Visitors can climb to the top of the lighthouse for a spectacular show. However, if you visit during one of the busier seasons, you may have to wait a while for a turn. The top of the lighthouse is so small that only two people can enter it at a time.
