Film genres categorize movies for viewers to choose from. There are six categories: action and adventure, comedy, drama, family, thriller, and personal taste. Genres can overlap and combine to create a unique storyline. Most movies fall into multiple genres, making them interesting to watch.

A film genre is a label applied to a film for categorization purposes. There are dozens of movie genres and sub-genres for viewers to choose from. Many of the major genres contain the most popular movies, while the less popular genres have movies that appeal to personal taste. Film genres can be divided into six categories.
The first category of movies is action and adventure. These movies typically have a hero, heroine, or group of heroes. This genre includes movies based on comic books, almost all with a car chase, and spy movies, among many others. They are characterized by a fast paced storyline, lots of action and movement towards a particular goal, such as a hidden treasure or getting away with a crime.

Comedy films are the second genre category. This includes mainstream comedies, romantic comedies, and buddy movies. Comedies take an ordinary situation and exaggerate areas of the plot to create humor. Effective comedy reflects a part of normal human interaction in a humorous way, allowing viewers a glimpse into their own lives.

The third category of films falls under the drama genres. This includes historical films, epics, westerns, fantasy, science fiction and sports. Again, some films can blur the lines between these genres. These movies are usually a little less about the character and more about the plot and location, including where the movie takes place. Many of these films, like many sports and drama films, are accurate depictions of real people or events. Other film genres, such as epic, science fiction, or fantasy films, create alternate worlds and realities, with mythical animals and storylines that would be impossible in real life.

Family films are usually rated PG (parental guidance) 13 or lower. They are films that both parents and children can enjoy. This category also includes films for children and teenagers. Children’s and family films are the genres that saw the introduction of computer-animated films. While these films may be labeled as children’s films, they are often enjoyed by viewers of all ages.

Movies in the thriller genre are written and directed in a way that is meant to keep the audience guessing and on the edge of their seats. Similar genres, such as horror, crime and suspense, have the same goal. Horror and thriller movies specifically try to hook the audience using fear, shock and disbelief. Movies with ghosts, demons, evil psychopaths, and other terrifying premises fit into these genres.

The last category contains films that are enjoyed as a matter of personal taste. Many of these films are not mainstream. These genres include musicals and independent films. While these films have gained some popularity, they are nowhere near seeing the popularity of other film genres.
There are some genres that could fit into any of the other categories. An example would be coming-of-age films, which could take place as part of a horror film, a children’s film, or anything in between. Film genres are usually combined to create the different look of a film. One genre may describe the plot of the film (romance), one genre may describe the period or setting (western), and another may describe the overall tone of the film (comedy or drama). There are very few films that fall into just one genre. This mixing and matching of film genres creates the fusion in the storyline that makes most movies interesting and makes viewers want to watch them.
