Bodybuilding is a sport where women can increase their muscle mass, with competitions taking place since the 1980s. Women compete separately from men due to a perceived gender disadvantage. Muscular women use various methods to build muscle and enhance their appearance, with different competitions available. Some women focus on fitness and figure competitions, where overall muscle tone and conformation are more important than size.

Muscular women are women who engage in bodybuilding, an activity designed to increase muscle mass. Women have been active in the bodybuilding community since the 1960s, and women’s bodybuilding competitions really took off in the 1980s. Women generally compete separately from men because it is believed that there would be a gender disadvantage, since that men are statistically larger and can achieve more muscle mass than women. However, both muscle men and muscle women are often seen at the same events, with different areas of competition available.

Bodybuilding is different from fitness and figure competitions. While all three involve building muscle, the goals are different, as are the judging criteria in competition. Muscular women are, as the name implies, extremely muscular. They may use a variety of means to build muscle, including lifting weights, using steroids, and using supplements designed to promote muscle growth. Some are limited to “natural” competitions that restrict the use of certain substances, while others compete in open competitions that do not do drug testing.

Muscular women often enhance the appearance of their muscles with tans and oils so that muscle definition is highly visible when competing. Makeup can also be used in some competitions. They tend to wear small garments out of modesty that allow their musculature to be clearly seen without exposing private areas of the anatomy, and they may wear and style their hair in a variety of ways. In a typical competition for muscular women, contestants strike various poses to allow the judges to see their muscular definition, and the women may be separated by weight classes for the sake of fair competition.

Being a muscular woman requires a lot of work. Muscular women have demanding physical routines that they use to stay in shape and build their muscles, and professionals spend a lot of time traveling to competitions and organizing promotional appearances. Women who can no longer compete can participate in judging, organizing events for muscular women, and other activities related to the bodybuilding community.

Some female bodybuilders prefer to focus on fitness and figure, where overall muscle tone and conformation are more important than size. For these women, the goal is not to build the biggest muscles possible, but to build balanced, symmetrical, and highly toned muscles. In these competitions, being overly muscular can actually be a hindrance, as such competitions have appearance standards that preclude highly developed muscles.
