The Mohawk Nation is a Native American tribe from New York, part of the larger Iroquois nation. They traded with Dutch settlers and were later allied with the British. Many Mohawks were baptized and took on Anglicized names, but the tribe remained intact. Today, there are Mohawk settlements and reservations in both the US and Canada, and they have the tribal right to operate gambling establishments in New York.
A Native American Mohawk is a Native American member of the Mohawk Nation, a particular type of indigenous North American native to the state of New York. The word Mohawk means People of the Flint in Iroquois, which is the original language of the tribe. At its height, the reach of the Mohawk Native Americans extended from eastern Canada to southern New York State.
Native Americans, also called American Indians—and sometimes, erroneously, simply Indians—existed throughout the continent of North America before European immigration forced them progressively further west during the 1600s, 1700s, and 1800s. Mohawk Native American tribe, part of the larger Iroquois nation, was first encountered by Westerners in the 1600s, when Dutch settlers initially reached the eastern shores of what is now the United States. The Mohawk Native Americans traded furs with the Dutch and established a strong alliance that lasted until the Dutch essentially ceded their North American holdings, following the fall of New Amsterdam and its takeover by the British.
The British, whose influence on the North American continent greatly strengthened towards the end of the seventeenth century, attempted to convert the Mohawk Native Americans to Christianity and to assimilate them to English culture. Many Mohawks were baptized and took on Anglicized names, but the Mohawk Nation remained intact as a separate entity. The tribe remained allied with England during the American Revolutionary War and again in the War of the 17th. This led to large numbers of Mohawks moving north to Canada, although significant American populations ultimately remained.
In the 21st century, the Mohawk Nation is still intact, in New York and southeastern Canada. In both countries, many Native American Mohawk citizens live on special settlements or reservations, although a large proportion live as integrated citizens. An estimated 50,000 Mohawks, for example, live in New York City alone. In Canada, various government initiatives in the 19th and 20th centuries attempted to assimilate Native Americans into Canadian-English culture. While the mastery of Iroquois and other historical traditions has fluctuated accordingly, a popular resurgence in Aboriginal culture, during the late 20th and early 21st centuries, has led to a renewed interest in Native American values and customs. Mohawks.
In New York, the Native American Mohawk tribe was granted the tribal right to operate gambling establishments as part of the federal Indian Gaming Regulation Act. The traditional association between Native American tribes and organized play dates back to the earliest histories of all Indian tribes. In the 1970s, various agreements between them and the US federal government laid the groundwork for tribal casinos, primarily as a way for tribes to become economically self-reliant. Despite various legal issues, as of 2009, there are two pending applications for Mohawk tribal gaming venues in that state.
