National security law covers various legal issues that differ in each country’s jurisdiction. Government agencies manage national security, and different branches of government have separate responsibilities. International treaties become part of national security law, and countries may have designations for different types of agreements. National laws establish government departments, and activities vary during times of peace and war.

National security law covers a large number of national and international legal issues. These matters and laws are different in each federal government’s jurisdiction. Each country’s foreign policy interacts directly with its national security law. A variety of government agencies work together to manage a nation’s national security.
Management of activities based on national security laws is separate between different parts of a government system. Each country handles its national security laws differently. The executive branch may have the right to create and/or manage aspects of foreign policy and foreign intelligence activities. The legislative branches divide responsibility among themselves, which could include the right to go to war or approve foreign treaties. The judicial branch reviews tasks completed by the executive branch or legislative branch to confirm that the actions are in compliance with the law.

Multiple governments enter into international foreign treaties which then become part of national security law for each country that signs into the treaty. Many countries are members of one or more jurisdictional councils which may set policies on various issues. One such group is the United Nations. Any international treaty to be invoked or enforced by the United Nations within its member countries must be registered with it. The United Nations Charter includes this requirement in order to prevent governments from executing secret treaties with each other.

Any given country may have designations for different types of agreements that internationally can be considered a treaty. This allows the country to separate the power to execute such an agreement between its different branches of government. These designations are an example of how national laws work together with international laws to create national security law.

The national laws of a given federal government might specifically designate how a nation’s national security laws are to be handled. These laws could establish the different departments of a government, such as the defense department or the creation of an intelligence agency. How each of these federal government agencies interact varies depending on whether or not the country is at peace or at war. During times of war, most national security law enforcement activities take on a more urgent nature than they do during times of peace.
