Navy officer training, also known as Officer Candidate School (OCS) and Officer Development School (ODS), is a physically and mentally demanding program that educates candidates in leadership, academics, and physical training. OCS is a 12-week program that provides general training, while ODS is a five-week program that trains newly appointed officers in their specific field of study. The goal is to ensure that newly commissioned naval officers are prepared to serve as leaders to both enlisted Navy and junior officers. Successful candidates are commissioned as officers in the United States Navy.
Navy officer training is the program people go through to become officers in the United States Navy. Entrants must meet eligibility requirements, including being at least 19, physically fit, and a United States citizen. They must also hold a bachelor’s degree, although an application to the program may be submitted prior to acquiring the degree. Navy officer training, also known as Officer Candidate School (OCS) and Officer Development School (ODS), is conducted at Naval Station Newport in Rhode Island.
The first part of Navy officer training is OCS. This 12-week program educates candidates in leadership and academics about commanding ships and submarines, and provides physical and military training. Academic classes in this program include leadership, navigation, sea power, military law, military indoctrination, naval warfare, and damage control. The physical portion of this training includes third-class swimming qualification and intense physical conditioning.
While OCS is not as physically demanding as Navy enlisted boot camp, it is both morally, mentally and physically demanding. The program requires total commitment and mental ability. Following completion of this portion of Navy officer training, successful candidates are commissioned as officers in the United States Navy.
The second part of Navy Officer Training, ODS, is a five-week program that trains newly appointed officers in their specific field of study. This can include nuclear engineering, medicine, oceanography, and chaplaincy, among many others. While not as physically demanding as OCS, this workout also includes physical conditioning and swimming qualifications. The academic classes included in this part of Navy officer training are the same as in OCS, although they provide more advanced instruction in these areas. The last two weeks of ODS are dedicated exclusively to leadership skills.
This final part of Navy officer education provides officers with both an introduction to their responsibility as officers and a comprehensive education in the structure, history, traditions, and customs of the Navy. It also provides leadership development training and information on military etiquette. The goal of ODS is to ensure that newly commissioned naval officers are prepared to serve as leaders to both enlisted Navy and junior officers.
Following the completion of these two parts of Navy officer training, new officers are either assigned to their station or go on to complete even more educational training if they intend to pursue a Navy career in a specialized area. Naval officer training is physically strenuous and mentally demanding. Despite this, those who do survive generally continue to be excellent officers and leaders in the United States Navy.
