Neg accel: what is it?

Negative acceleration means an object’s speed is changing in a negative direction, indicating both magnitude and direction. Velocity measures how far an object travels in a given period, while acceleration measures how an object’s speed changes. Negative acceleration can mean an object is increasing or decreasing in speed.

Negative acceleration means that an object’s speed is changing in a negative direction, which can mean it’s traveling slower or faster. The term “acceleration” is used in physics to describe a change in speed for an object, and it is a vector quantity, meaning that it indicates both magnitude and direction. Something traveling with positive velocity, velocity is also a vector, and experiencing negative acceleration is slowing down. Conversely, an object that has negative acceleration and negative velocity is actually moving faster.

It is often easier for someone to understand acceleration in general and negative acceleration in particular by understanding velocity first. Although the terms “velocity”, “velocity” and “acceleration” are sometimes used interchangeably in common conversation, these three words have very different meanings when referring to physics. “Velocity” is a measure of how far an object travels in a given period of time and is often expressed in miles per hour (mph) or meters per second (m/s).

“Velocity” is similar to velocity, but indicates not only the actual speed itself but also the direction in which an object is moving, making it a vector quantity. This means that an object traveling with a speed of 20 m/s and another traveling at -20 m/s both move at the same speed but in opposite directions. “Acceleration” is a measure of how an object’s speed changes, and is often expressed in terms of meters per second, per second (m/s/s or m/s2). An object moving stationary one second, then moving at 10 m/s the next second, 20 m/s the second, and 30 m/s the next second has an acceleration of 10 m/s2 since this is the change in speed.

One of the easiest ways to see negative acceleration is to throw something in the air. When the thrown object leaves his hand, it moves at a certain speed, such as 40m/s. The force of gravity pulls the object downward as it travels upward in a positive direction, giving it an acceleration of about -10 m/s2. After one second the object is still moving at 30 m/s, another second later it is moving at 20 m/s, and after another two seconds it stops briefly before continuing its downward acceleration.

Negative acceleration simply indicates the direction of acceleration and can mean that an object is increasing or decreasing in speed. An object moving with a positive speed, which has a negative acceleration, is slowing down. On the other hand, an object moving with negative acceleration, and with negative velocity, is actually moving faster. This same basic principle also applies to positive acceleration; when the direction of velocity and acceleration are the same the object moves faster, and when they are opposite the object slows down.
