A nonprofit commission is responsible for directing a charitable organization in its management, policies, and goals. Boards come in many sizes and structures, but they all share mostly the same tasks. From fundraising to operations management to goal setting and more, these diverse groups hold all the power of a nonprofit organization.

The term “non-profit” doesn’t mean that charities don’t make money, it simply means that they exist to provide a service to the community, not to earn money. A board is traditionally made up of multiple members, ranging from a few to well over 10 in some cases. These members are not employees of the charity, but usually business people and citizens of the community. These members rarely receive compensation for their time and effort and see it as an act of charitable service.

The primary responsibility of a nonprofit board is to make sure that the organization meets its expectations. The group meets frequently to review its mission statements and policies, to ensure they are carried out by the charity. If they find that these expectations are not being met, the board has the power to change policies.

A non-profit board is also responsible for operations for the entire organization. That doesn’t mean they oversee the hiring of every employee, but rather they guide hiring by executives. Presidents and executives must meet with the board frequently to report on progress, and if there is a vacancy in any of these positions, the board typically makes the new hiring decision.

Finances are another key concern for a non-profit board. The board of directors routinely investigates the nonprofit’s books, noting whether the money in and out is meeting expectations. They are also responsible for managing fundraising plans. The board of directors frequently determines how much money the organization will need to operate and makes suggestions on how to raise the necessary funds.

The nonprofit board, or at least its president, normally functions as the public face of the organization. When media interviews need to be completed, board members often step up to the microphone due to their inside knowledge and expertise. Board members are also expected to appear at public events in order to help promote the non-profit organization.
